Undergraduate Minor in Biomedical Engineering
The Ohio State University Biomedical Engineering (BME) Department is proud to offer the Undergraduate Minor in Biomedical Engineering.
The BME Minor is a set of core courses integrating both biomedical and life sciences and engineering. It requires a minimum of 20 credit hours and consists of two required courses and at least four additional BME courses. Students will take an introductory survey of biomedical engineering technology, as well as courses in biomechanics, bioinstrumentation, bioethics, and physiology.
Important: Since the minor can take up to two full years to earn, the minor usually is initiated during the sophomore or junior year. Advance planning is crucial to meeting all course prerequisites. Advanced planning simply means that you must look at the BME UG Minor curriculum and determine which classes you wish to take and when you need to take them. There may be one or two hidden pre-reqs in there, so be sure to map it out carefully - for example, if BME 631 requires ME 420, the first thing you must do is to be sure you have met ME 420 pre-reqs (i.e., ME 410).
Step 1 - Map out your BME Minor Plan:

Take 2 required courses:
- EEOB 232 Introductory Physiology
or
PhysioCB 311 Principles of Human Physiology - BME 500 Survey of Biomedical Engineering
Select 4 more courses:
- BME 631 Fundamentals of Biomaterials
- BME 686 Biomedical Ultrasound
- BME 701 Cardiovascular Bioengineering
- BME 706 Medical Imaging
- BME 721 Biological Transport
- BME 732 Soft-Tissue Biomaterials (Alt yr w/733)
- BME 733 Hard-Tissue Biomaterials (Alt yr w/732)
- BME 741 Tissue Mechanics
- BME 762 Biomedical Microdevices
- BME 765 Cellular Nanotech
- BME 771 Biomedical Instrumentation
Be sure to ask about BME courses not listed here. BME 694 course offerings such as "Fundamentals of Cell and Tissue Engineering", "Fundamentals of Biomedical Imaging", "Biomedical Optics", "Emerging Biomedical Nanotech" and others may be approved for use in the minor on a case-by-case basis. They will be added to the BME Minor Curriculum once permanent course numbers are established.
For successful completion of the BME Minor, all courses in the minor must be taken for a letter grade with a PHR of 2.00 or higher. No grade below C- will be permitted in courses comprising the BME Minor.
Step 2 - Enroll in the BME Minor Program by completing a
Minor Program Form
- Get form signed by Major Advisor from undergraduate enrollment unit.
- Submit signed form to BME Education Coordinator, 260 Bevis Hall, 1080 Carmack Rd, where it will be processed, and a BME Minor Advisor assigned.
- Be sure to file form with College along with application to graduate, per College specifications.
- To change a program of study after it has been submitted, a newly signed form must be re-filed with all parties.
